Today's peek into the State Library of WA's rare collection is the first of a few Facebook posts featuring largely unseen artifacts from the Fairbairn Collection. Artifacts (objects made by a human being, typically one of cultural or historical interest) only make up a small part of the collection purchased by the SLWA in 2012 which contains over 3000 items. Other items include letters, photographs, memoirs and diaries associated with pioneer Resident Magistrate Robert Fairbairn (1841-1922). Whi

Turning a new leaf! 'Fleurs, fruits et feuillages choisis de l'île de Java' was first produced in 1862 by Dutch botanical artist Berthe Hoola van Nooten. It features 40 coloured plates of exotic fruit, flowers and foliage from the island of Java in Indonesia. Inside you'll find beautiful illustrations of rambutans, durian, mangosteens and more! The plates are extraordinarily vivid and were created through chromolithography – a new technique at the time for printing multicoloured illustrations.

Very little is known about the men and boys who are pictured, which is why we need your help to complete the records. See the portraits on display in our new exhibition Dunera: Stories of Internment.
