This February, a NASA-led research campaign called #SnowEx kicked off in Colorado. The 5-year study will advance global measurements of how much snow is on the ground at any given time and how much liquid water is contained in that snow. The amount of water in snow plays a huge role in water availability for drinking water, agriculture, and hydropower. Teams of 50 researchers are stationed at Grand Mesa and Senator Beck Basin over a three-week period to measure snow using a variety of snow-sensi

More and more, mountain snow in the high-altitude region surrounding Mount Everest and the Himalayas is disappearing. Scientists measure and track the winter snow line – the elevation at and above which seasonal snow persists on top of glacial ice. Over time, this line has been creeping higher and higher in the region due to a combination of warmer and drier conditions. As a result, snow is becoming more sparse at lower elevations in the Himalayas and surrounding area. The change is visible in t

In the wake of a winter storm that blanketed numerous U.S. states with snow and ice, unusually low temperatures continued to grip a large swath of the nation in late January 2026. This animation depicts surface air temperatures across part of the Northern Hemisphere, including North America, from January 21 to 29. It combines satellite observations with temperatures calculated by a version of the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) global model, which uses mathematical equations to simulate ph

Sea ice update 🌊🧊 Global sea ice hit a record low this winter, NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center report. This year was the lowest Arctic sea ice maximum and the second-lowest Antarctic sea ice minimum. Sea ice forms and spreads across Arctic seas every winter. But in recent years, less new ice has been forming, and less multi-year ice has accumulated. Winter sea ice cover in the Arctic was the lowest it’s ever been at its annual peak on March 22, 2025, continuing a downward trend
